Theory of Knowledge (TOK), a distinctive exploration of epistemology within the IB Diploma Programme, offers a reflective approach to understanding the knowledge you construct as a knower and the process of acquiring that knowledge. It encourages critical examination of the reliability of information considered as knowledge, using twelve core TOK concepts.
The TOK course is divided into three interconnected parts: the core, optional themes, and areas of knowledge (AOKs). These are explored through open-ended, contestable knowledge questions, organized within a knowledge framework with four key elements that guide students in exploring, comparing, and connecting the AOKs and optional themes.
In the updated TOK 2022 curriculum, the assessment is divided into two parts: the externally assessed TOK essay, which accounts for 67% of the grade, and the internally assessed TOK exhibition, which contributes 33%. The TOK essay links a prescribed title to relevant AOKs, while the TOK exhibition examines how TOK applies to the real world through personal real-life objects and an internal assessment (IA) prompt related to one of the TOK themes.
